Mountain Safety and Hazard Prevention
Beware of the following elements:
- Strong wind will drop your body temperature.
- Clouds movements show the change of weather.
- Rain will raise the river level and makes the trails slippery.
- Don't light any fire during day hike.
- Fog bothers your visibility.
- Thunderstorm is a warning signal of lightening.
- Lightening will cause fatal incident.
- Bees bite will give you painful memory.
- Mosquitoes are annoying.
- Snakes are always found in shade area in hot and humid days.
- Poison ivy will give you a permanent scar.
- Poison oak is not easy to be recognized.
- Deer ticks are always found in isolated trails.
- Lime disease on deer ticks can be a fatal disease.
- A bear family may appear in front of you.
Mountain Safety hints
- First aid kit.
- Don't move the serious patient. Send 2 persons to get help.
- Notified someone about your hiking and your plan.
- Use flash light or whistle to send out the signal. Moss code for SOS is 3 short, 3 long, 3 short.
- International signal for asking help is: six light flash or whistle blow. Rescuer's response is: three times.
