10 What-to-Do in hiking
- When get lost with the group
Turn back to find the trailmark or stay at the spot. Blow the whistle to gain help and show your location.
- When there are rolling stones and debris on downslope
Walk on only big flat stones or step on 2 small stones that they will interlock even they are not stable.
- When knee or ankle sprain
"RICE": Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate. Immediately elevate the injured part and apply an ice bag. Once the area is thoroughly cooled, apply an elastic wrap to compress the injury.
- When bleeding cannot be stopped
Apply pressure on the wounds with gauze or clean cloth or apply ice to contract blood vessel.
- When encounter dangerous animals
Stay calm, eyes on them, don’t make quick movement but noise to scare them away.
- When feeling of dehyration or sunstroke
Drink water slowly and stop fluid loss. Water is preferable to sport drinks and other commercially-sold rehydration fluids. Sit under shade. Keep warm if it is windy.
- When feeling of hypothermia
Use "HELP" position: Heat Escape Lessing Position, preferably sit in a dry place or close to a fire. Huddle together or cover with warm blanket.
- When cramp on leg muscles
Resting, deep breathing and stretching. Restore the salt balance immediately.
- When the weather turns bad
Change the route to the low elevation and go to the closest safe places such as main road or settlement.
- When your skin is itchy
Wash your skin with soap and water, apply rubbing alcohol with cotton balls and rinse with water. Consult the doctor.
